gulf of mexico | galveston

After visiting a couple of water spots near Conroe, Texas, I decided to venture a little further and actually get my toes in the water. I did not want to miss the opportunity to see the ocean and experience Galveston, TX for myself. I thought this would be a fun trip as all my research suggested as much. I’m sure you know by now that I love the water. I love all bodies of water – lakes, oceans, rivers, streams, creeks, ponds - you get the idea. When I arrived at the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston, I did not find the water quite as I expected. I did not know that brown ocean water existed; but, it does! It’s not exactly what I would describe as pretty. Does that make me snobby? Perhaps so, but you know what? This is all part of the adventure. After all, I want to experience everything!

I found some beaches and I decided to take a walk on the sand. It didn’t feel like sand; it felt like dirt. But the traditional elements of the beach were still present as there were seashells aplenty, rhythmic waves, and a vast ocean view. It was beautiful, just a different kind of beauty.

I decided to venture a little further down the road and I found the Port Bolivar Ferry could take me to the Bolivar Peninsula (still in Galveston) for free. I was not, however, prepared for the hour long trip. I fell asleep on the ferry and awoke to the car behind me honking. Hey, I was relaxed! I drove to Crystal Beach, but it was not as easy to access or park, so it’s not your typical beach town. I drove around and enjoyed the scenery, noticed the houses on stilts, and decided to stop for dinner. I chose the Nauti Beaver Hut because, yes, the name made me chuckle. I enjoyed my time there! The atmosphere was not what I was expecting, but I gave it a chance, and I am glad I did. I had plenty of laughs and enjoyed my time with some great music. Apparently, that night was Music Bingo Night so the DJ was dressed in a cupid costume. It was a sight to see! The menu is pretty limited, but I opted for a Dam Good Burger and Buffalo wings and both were pretty dam good. If you are looking for fancy and upscale atmosphere in Bolivar Peninsula, you won’t find it. Several years ago, Hurricane Ike hit the peninsula and according to one local official, the

Of course, no trip to Texas would be complete without visiting the most important beaver – Bucky the Beaver! I had to stop at Buc-ee’s to use their famous bathrooms! Am I the only one? I took advantage of the time and walked around and did a little shopping. I also noticed that they are hiring and as a true Recruiter, I had to take a picture. If you live nearby and are looking for a good (and well-paying job), you might want to check them out!

Galveston, you were not at all what I was expecting, but I am so glad that I visited. I later learned that Trinity River feeds Lake Livingstone and flows down to Galveston which is the main reason the water is brown. Apparently, the water in Louisiana is also very similar to Galveston. I’m not sure you will want to swim in that water or really sit to enjoy the view of the tide, but if you close your eyes, you won’t know the difference (just my opinion).

If you’ve visited Galveston before Hurricane Ike, please share what the peninsula used to be like!
