Watson lake

Imagine a giant's playground of whimsical rock formations, where boulders seem to defy gravity and twist into fascinating shapes. That's the Granite Dells! These ancient wonders in Prescott, Arizona, are nature's own art gallery, perfect for exploring, climbing, and sparking your imagination. Watson Lake offers a wealth of outdoor activities and natural beauty to explore, and being less than two hours outside of Phoenix, it is the perfect place to enjoy relaxing activities on and off the lake. It is definitely a more serene vibe with the entire lake being a “no wake lake”.

Here are our recommendations for activities to take advantage of while visiting Watson Lake.

Activities on the Water - Kayaking, Canoeing, and Fishing

One of the best ways to experience the pristine beauty of Watson Lake is by kayaking or canoeing across its tranquil waters. Rent a kayak or canoe from the on-site rental facility and paddle along the lake's scenic shoreline, marveling at the towering granite boulders and unique rock formations that dot the landscape. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture the stunning views and wildlife sightings along the way.

When it comes to fishing at Watson Lake, anglers are in for a treat. With two boat ramps conveniently located along the lake, casting a line into the tranquil waters has never been easier. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a novice fisherman, you'll find plenty of opportunities to reel in a catch. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish species, including bass, trout, and catfish, making it a favorite destination for fishing enthusiasts of all skill levels. With the breathtaking backdrop of the Granite Dells, spending a day on the water at Watson Lake is as much about the experience as it is about the catch.

Activities Near the Water - Hiking, Biking, and Rock Climbing

For those who prefer to explore on foot, Watson Lake offers a network of hiking trails that wind through its picturesque surroundings. Lace up your hiking boots (although depending on how much hiking, I found that tennis shoes worked fine) and set out on a scenic adventure along the Peavine Trail or the Watson Lake Loop Trail, both of which offer breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding granite formations. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including birds of prey, deer, and javelinas, as you hike through the rugged terrain. The weather was perfect for my visit, and while the hike is not terribly difficult, I did find it a little strenuous at times (although, I do not hike a ton so there is that). Take plenty of water and rest when you are able to. I appreciated the fact that the hike is marked with “white dots” in order to help you stay on the path.

For those looking to explore the surrounding area on two wheels, Watson Lake offers excellent opportunities for mountain biking and e-biking. With its network of scenic trails winding through the rugged terrain of the Granite Dells, riders can enjoy thrilling descents, challenging climbs, and stunning views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Whether you prefer the challenge of traditional mountain biking or the added assistance of an e-bike, there's something for everyone to enjoy. So grab your helmet, hop on your bike, and get ready to experience the beauty of Watson Lake from a whole new perspective. If you don’t have one or either of these, check out opportunities to rent one for an awesome day at the lake!

With its unique granite cliffs and boulder-strewn landscape, Watson Lake is a paradise for rock climbing and bouldering enthusiasts. I did see some people rock climbing behind the dam but there seemed to be many opportunities to rock climb around the lake.

Activities on or off the water - Photography, Nature Watching, Camping ,and Soaking in the Sun

After a day of adventure, take some time to unwind and soak in the tranquility of Watson Lake's scenic surroundings. Pack a picnic basket with your favorite snacks and find a shady spot along the lakeshore to enjoy a leisurely lunch with family and friends. Listen to the gentle lapping of the water against the shore as you bask in the warm Arizona sunshine and savor the simple joys of outdoor living. There are also several ramadas and a LARGE grassy area where you can fly a kite while enjoying the company of your family and friends. Across from the large grassy area, you will find a playground for your younger kids. Bringing teenagers or just the adults, there is a bocce ball, disc golf course, and horseshoes.

With its stunning natural beauty and diverse wildlife, Watson Lake is a paradise for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Bring your camera and capture the vibrant colors of the desert landscape, the intricate patterns of the granite rock formations, and the myriad bird species that call the lake home. Whether you're an amateur shutterbug or a seasoned pro, there are endless opportunities for capturing the beauty of the Southwest. We saw a dead snake on our way down to the lake, so be careful in those summer months (not sure it was poisonous, but I would be scared if it was alive regardless)!

And for those who simply can't bear to tear themselves away from this idyllic setting, why not extend your stay with a night of camping? Bring along your RV and settle in for a night under the stars, surrounded by the serene beauty of Watson Lake and the Granite Dells.

From kayaking and hiking to rock climbing and picnicking, Watson Lake offers a wealth of outdoor activities and natural beauty to explore. Whether you're seeking adventure or simply looking to unwind in nature's embrace, a visit to Watson Lake is sure to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. So, pack your bags and grab your sense of wonder and get ready for an adventure among the Dells' enchanting granite landscapes!
