5 must-visit water spots in arizona

As a proud native Arizonan, I've had the privilege of uncovering some pretty spectacular water spots that our diverse state has to offer. From tranquil lakes nestled amidst towering red rock formations to hidden creeks winding through lush canyons, Arizona has a plethora of aquatic wonders waiting to be explored.

Here are my top five favorite water spots in Arizona:

  1. Lake Powell: Lake Powell is hard to describe because when I think about my times there, I feel the calm and peace. I can truly get away from society. The lake is huge with amazing canyons – a true marvel of nature. While I did not experience Lake Powell until I met Rick (in my late 30s), it is my current favorite lake.  Imagine a week away from your hectic work schedule, your kids away from the anxieties of this world, and most of all, no technology. Now, for those of you that cannot survive without the internet, you do have options (i.e. Starlink), but I would not recommend letting work get in the way of you being able to truly disconnect and enjoy life. I don’t think we do that enough!

At Lake Powell, you have endless possibilities of sheer bliss.  If you want to sightsee, the lake is full of beautiful canyons – a place where you can feel the anxieties of this world melt away. If you are a water sports enthusiast, you have so many opportunities – with canyons that are larger than many lakes around the world and all-day fun. I definitely recommend renting a houseboat and take a week-long vacation!  If you opt for the shoulder (between peak & off peak) season, which is typically more affordable, you’ll have glass-like water – perfect for those barefoot skiers, kayakers, and paddle boarders. 2. Canyon Lake: Tucked away in the rugged terrain of the Tonto National Forest, Canyon Lake holds a special place in my heart as a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. With spectacular views and scenic drive, Canyon Lake is a great spot for Phoenix residents who are looking to getaway for the day. You can find more about Canyon Lake in our travel section. See our Canyon Lake page for more information, recommendations, and pictures.

  3. Saguaro Lake: A hidden gem nestled in the Tonto National Forest, Saguaro Lake offers a quintessential Arizona experience that's hard to beat. Saguaro Lake is nostalgic for me as my family went to Saguaro Lake nearly every weekend during the summer. We have enjoyed so many watersports here! If it is not overcrowded, consider spending the day at Butcher Jones beach. You will find hundreds of adults and children in the summer escaping the desert heat. During the cooler months, you will still find people enjoying the weather and taking their pets on a water side hike at Butcher Jones beach. It is one of my favorite hikes!

  4. Slide Rock State Park/Oak Creek Canyon: Sedona is home to some of the most unique and beautiful rock formations found in Arizona. As you take State Route 89A north to Oak Creek Canyon, Slide Rock State Park is roughly a twenty-minute drive just outside of Sedona. Slide Rock is a natural playground that allows you the opportunity to swim in small pools formed between the beautiful red rocks. The rocks have been smoothed over time by the river’s waterflow, so there are plenty of places to slide down the rocks from pool to pool. There will be a line at the parking lot if you decide to take your time in the morning as many locals know about this spot. Bring your lunch as there is plenty of grassy areas and a small gift shop.

  5. Tonto Natural Bridge State Park: Sequestered away in the scenic mountains of central Arizona, Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is a secret treasure that never fails to impress. As a native Arizonan, I've marveled at the sheer size and beauty of the park's natural travertine bridge while hiking along the creek below. Surrounded by lush forests, stunning waterfalls, and breathtaking viewpoints, Tonto Natural Bridge State Park offers a tranquil retreat for visitors seeking solace in the heart of the desert. If you aren’t in the mood for too much adventure, not to worry, you can park your car and walk over to the viewing sites where you can see the natural bridge without too much effort. Pack a lunch and explore the outdoors!

Arizona's diverse landscape is home to some of the most breathtaking water spots in the United States. While there are many other great water spots in Arizona, these are some of my favorites…so far. I still have some exploring to do!
