7 Activities your kids will enjoy at the lake!

Many of my favorite memories are those we made at the lake. While I did not appreciate it as much as a kid, I look back now and appreciate the fact that my parents took us regularly. We spent quality time with each other (let’s not mention the times we bickered with each other).

Twenty plus years ago we didn’t have the technology that competes for our time and attention like we have today. With kids being on their iPads, computers, phones, and every other gadget, I think it is even more important to find activities that entice families away from their screens into a fun environment where they can meaningfully interact with each other.

Each lake has its unique draw– views, amenities, hikes, BBQ’s, and beaches. Do some research and look at the websites to see what options are available. Try not to accomplish too much in one visit. If you do not frequent lakes, focus on one activity – but always take food, snacks, drinks, and WATER!

Whether you're seeking excitement on the water or simply looking for a place to relax and unwind, here are 7 activities you can do with your kids at the lake – and things they will enjoy too!

  1. Swimming: When you look at a body of water like the lake or ocean, especially if you travel to it, it is hard to imagine not seeing yourself in the water…unless of course it is winter (you wouldn’t catch me in the water until May, but you could find me riding a jet ski in March!). Take a swimsuit and jump in the water with the kids. Take a floaty and some water toys and fully immerse yourself in the experience.

  2. Paddleboarding or Kayaking: Paddleboarding has become a great water activity that people of all ages enjoy today. You can rent these for relatively low prices, but if you plan to visit multiple locations, I recommend you invest in your own boards. Depending on the ages of your child(ren), the adult may need to take care of the paddling. For newbie paddlers, it may be harder to get to the point of standing up – don’t worry that is something to aim for over time. Many paddleboards only come with a one-sided oar. I highly recommend buying a double-sided oar so you can sit and enjoy a leisure paddle around the lake. Not only is this a great way to explore the water and savor the scenery, but it also provides an opportunity for teamwork and coordination as you navigate the current together.

  3. Have a Picnic: During the cooler months, the smaller crowds and crisp weather create the ideal setting for a picnic. You can watch the kids explore and play; you can relax while listening to the waves hitting the shore; you can bring binoculars to observe birds or take in the views. Once everyone has taken advantage of the immediate surroundings, you can unpack the sandwiches and snacks. Everyone becomes ravenous at the lake so make sure you pack more than enough food!

  4. Go for a Nature Hike: Many lakes have some pretty spectacular trails you can take advantage of while visiting your local lakes/reservoirs. Lace up your hiking boots or tennis shoes and explore the scenic trails surrounding the lake with your kids. Keep an eye out for wildlife, native plants, and breathtaking views as you venture on a family adventure in nature. Take some photos and don’t forget your WATER!

  5. Try Water Sports: For families with teens who crave excitement, why not let them test the waters with sports like skiing, wakeboarding, or tubing? These thrilling activities are sure to get everyone's adrenaline pumping while creating some memorable moments. This particular activity can get quite expensive if you do not have a boat…that being said, I would highly encourage you purchase one. YOLO!

  6. Play Outdoor Games: Sometimes a different environment is all you need to enliven a common activity. This holds true for both adults and kids. Take the outdoor toys you have at home (think: frisbee, soccer, volleyball, or beach ball) and enjoy some friendly competition by the lake or a leisure game of catch. Either way, these are great ways to stay active and play at the beach.

  7. Scavenger Hunt: Put together a quick list of various things for your kids to find at the lake. This is a great way to get the kids walking around and working with each other to locate everything on the list. It is so much fun seeing their smiles hearing their their squeals of delight as they find things that were not on the list. There also might be some tears shed when things cannot be found, so watch out!

While all of these activities are sure to make for a great day at the lake, it is important that you plan ahead to ensure you and your family follow proper safety procedures.

From swimming and fishing to hiking and picnicking, there's no shortage of fun activities to do with your kids (of all ages) at the lake. Whether you're seeking adventure or simply looking to relax and unwind, the lake offers families endless opportunities for quality time and unforgettable experiences. So pack your sunscreen, grab your swimsuits, and get ready to make memories that will last a lifetime!
