Being in Houston for a long weekend, I discovered Lake Livingston about an hour away. My weekend had been a whirlwind and I wanted some respite in nature before I headed back to Phoenix. With my departure not set until later in the day, I decided to take a day trip. Lake Livingston, here I come!
I drove to the lake and was immediately impressed by the amount of greenery on the drive – so serene! As I entered Lake Livingston State Park, I did not know what to expect. I paid $6 to enter the park (kids 12 and under are free). The road cut through the dense forest of pine trees. What a spectacular view! I navigated around the park to scope out the best place for me to spend my time.
From what I observed, Lake Livingston State Park had all the activities and amenities needed for anyone, or group, to have a pleasurable day!

Hunting for alligators? Don’t feed them.
Yes, you read that correctly. I was also a little nervous when I saw the “Do Not Feed Alligators” sign. Don’t worry, I asked one of the park rangers for more information! The good news is, he said there has only been four sightings in 10 years. So, there you go…it’s mostly safe! But seriously, alligators prefer shallow water so you are not likely going to have an issue.
Definitely take a copy of the map that is offered at the entrance. If I had more time, I definitely would have done more of the trails! I opted to walk the Pineywoods Boardwalk Trail and I loved it! It was nestled in the Pines and walking on the Boardwalk as fun. Many of the other trails had several large puddles due to the recent rain but the boardwalk offered a mud-free path. I was able to stop by the frog and duck ponds, butterfly garden, and bird blind. I was on the lookout for bald eagles, but no such luck for me on this cloudy, winter day.
I can’t tell you enough about how much I loved this lake! While I was concerned that the water was brown, the park ranger reassured me that this was the cause of flash flooding in the areas that feed into the lake. He also told me that the water should return to its blue/green color in a few weeks.
I can’t wait to return here and spend the day kayaking and hiking! Now it’s your turn! I want to hear from you! Are you thinking about visiting Lake Livingston State Park? Have you already visited? Share your comments!
